Silo Killer Qu'est ce c'est?
Rainbow is a small dry place with a population of about five hundred people in the north of Victoria about six hours from Melbourne in a region known as the Mallee. It became established at the turn of the 20th century at a site known as Rainbow Rise named after a crescent sand dune, which, after a local shower, was temporarily covered with wildflowers. I guess this was at the time the wheat lands were being opened up because the dune was located where the grain silos stand today.
The Mallee is the sort of region where conversations always turn around rainfall. “They had two points last night at Hopetoun” or, “Wycheproof had a shower” were the sort of things you would hear at the Eureka Pub or in the town’s shop whilst waiting to be served. It is the hottest and driest part of the State. I kid you not, I’ve seen rain falling out of the sky which never reached the ground. I've also known farmers commit suicide when the rain they expected failed to materialise.
It was late January 1984 when I first arrived there, the drought was in full swing and I had no idea then that I was about to take the first step into an adventure that would take me, in fear of my life, half way across a continent.
